ਸਤਿਗੁਰੁ ਸੇਵੇ ਆਪਣਾ ਸੋ ਸਿਰੁ ਲੇਖੈ ਲਾਇ ॥

satigur seve aapanaa so sir lekhai lai ||

Those who serve their True Guru are certified and accepted.

ਵਿਚਹੁ ਆਪੁ ਗਵਾਇ ਕੈ ਰਹਨਿ ਸਚਿ ਲਿਵ ਲਾਇ ॥

vichahu aap gavai kai rahan sach liv lai ||

They eradicate selfishness and conceit from within; they remain lovingly absorbed in the True One.

ਸਤਿਗੁਰੁ ਜਿਨੀ ਨ ਸੇਵਿਓ ਤਿਨਾ ਬਿਰਥਾ ਜਨਮੁ ਗਵਾਇ ॥

satigur jinee na sevio tinaa birathaa janam gavai ||

Those who do not serve the True Guru waste away their lives in vain.

ਨਾਨਕ ਜੋ ਤਿਸੁ ਭਾਵੈ ਸੋ ਕਰੇ ਕਹਣਾ ਕਿਛੂ ਨ ਜਾਇ ॥੧॥

naanak jo tis bhaavai so kare kahanaa kichhoo na jai ||1||

O Nanak, the Lord does just as He pleases. No one has any say in this. ||1||

Third Mehla:

ਮਨੁ ਵੇਕਾਰੀ ਵੇੜਿਆ ਵੇਕਾਰਾ ਕਰਮ ਕਮਾਇ ॥

man vekaaree veRiaa vekaaraa karam kamai ||

With the mind encircled by wickedness and evil, people do evil deeds.

ਦੂਜੈ ਭਾਇ ਅਗਿਆਨੀ ਪੂਜਦੇ ਦਰਗਹ ਮਿਲੈ ਸਜਾਇ ॥

dhoojai bhai agiaanee poojadhe dharageh milai sajai ||

The ignorant worship the love of duality; in the Lord's Court they shall be punished.

ਆਤਮ ਦੇਉ ਪੂਜੀਐ ਬਿਨੁ ਸਤਿਗੁਰ ਬੂਝ ਨ ਪਾਇ ॥

aatam dheau poojeeaai bin satigur boojh na pai ||

So worship the Lord, the Light of the soul; without the True Guru, understanding is not obtained.

ਜਪੁ ਤਪੁ ਸੰਜਮੁ ਭਾਣਾ ਸਤਿਗੁਰੂ ਕਾ ਕਰਮੀ ਪਲੈ ਪਾਇ ॥

jap tap sa(n)jam bhaanaa satiguroo kaa karamee palai pai ||

Meditation, penance and austere self-discipline are found by surrendering to the True Guru's Will. By His Grace this is received.

ਨਾਨਕ ਸੇਵਾ ਸੁਰਤਿ ਕਮਾਵਣੀ ਜੋ ਹਰਿ ਭਾਵੈ ਸੋ ਥਾਇ ਪਾਇ ॥੨॥

naanak sevaa surat kamaavanee jo har bhaavai so thai pai ||2||

O Nanak, serve with this intuitive awareness; only that which is pleasing to the Lord is approved. ||2||

Pauree:

ਹਰਿ ਹਰਿ ਨਾਮੁ ਜਪਹੁ ਮਨ ਮੇਰੇ ਜਿਤੁ ਸਦਾ ਸੁਖੁ ਹੋਵੈ ਦਿਨੁ ਰਾਤੀ ॥

har har naam japahu man mere jit sadhaa sukh hovai dhin raatee ||

Chant the Name of the Lord, Har, Har, O my mind; it will bring you eternal peace, day and night.

ਹਰਿ ਹਰਿ ਨਾਮੁ ਜਪਹੁ ਮਨ ਮੇਰੇ ਜਿਤੁ ਸਿਮਰਤ ਸਭਿ ਕਿਲਵਿਖ ਪਾਪ ਲਹਾਤੀ ॥

har har naam japahu man mere jit simarat sabh kilavikh paap lahaatee ||

Chant the Name of the Lord, Har, Har, O my mind; meditating on it, all sins and misdeeds shall be erased.

ਹਰਿ ਹਰਿ ਨਾਮੁ ਜਪਹੁ ਮਨ ਮੇਰੇ ਜਿਤੁ ਦਾਲਦੁ ਦੁਖ ਭੁਖ ਸਭ ਲਹਿ ਜਾਤੀ ॥

har har naam japahu man mere jit dhaaladh dhukh bhukh sabh leh jaatee ||

Chant the Name of the Lord, Har, Har, O my mind; through it, all poverty, pain and hunger shall be removed.

ਹਰਿ ਹਰਿ ਨਾਮੁ ਜਪਹੁ ਮਨ ਮੇਰੇ ਮੁਖਿ ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਪ੍ਰੀਤਿ ਲਗਾਤੀ ॥

har har naam japahu man mere mukh gurmukh preet lagaatee ||

Chant the Name of the Lord, Har, Har, O my mind; as Gurmukh, declare your love.

ਜਿਤੁ ਮੁਖਿ ਭਾਗੁ ਲਿਖਿਆ ਧੁਰਿ ਸਾਚੈ ਹਰਿ ਤਿਤੁ ਮੁਖਿ ਨਾਮੁ ਜਪਾਤੀ ॥੧੩॥

jit mukh bhaag likhiaa dhur saachai har tit mukh naam japaatee ||13||

One who has such pre-ordained destiny inscribed upon his forehead by the True Lord, chants the Naam, the Name of the Lord. ||13||

ਸਲੋਕ ਮਃ ੩ ॥

Shalok, Third Mehla:

ਸਤਿਗੁਰੁ ਜਿਨੀ ਨ ਸੇਵਿਓ ਸਬਦਿ ਨ ਕੀਤੋ ਵੀਚਾਰੁ ॥

satigur jinee na sevio sabadh na keeto veechaar ||

Those who do not serve the True Guru, and who do not contemplate the Word of the Shabad

ਅੰਤਰਿ ਗਿਆਨੁ ਨ ਆਇਓ ਮਿਰਤਕੁ ਹੈ ਸੰਸਾਰਿ ॥

a(n)tar giaan na aaio mritak hai sa(n)saar ||

-spiritual wisdom does not enter into their hearts; they are like dead bodies in the world.

ਲਖ ਚਉਰਾਸੀਹ ਫੇਰੁ ਪਇਆ ਮਰਿ ਜੰਮੈ ਹੋਇ ਖੁਆਰੁ ॥

lakh chauraaseeh fer piaa mar ja(n)mai hoi khuaar ||

They go through the cycle of 8.4 million reincarnations, and they are ruined through death and rebirth.

ਸਤਿਗੁਰ ਕੀ ਸੇਵਾ ਸੋ ਕਰੇ ਜਿਸ ਨੋ ਆਪਿ ਕਰਾਏ ਸੋਇ ॥

satigur kee sevaa so kare jis no aap karaae soi ||

He alone serves the True Guru, whom the Lord Himself inspires to do so.

ਸਤਿਗੁਰ ਵਿਚਿ ਨਾਮੁ ਨਿਧਾਨੁ ਹੈ ਕਰਮਿ ਪਰਾਪਤਿ ਹੋਇ ॥

satigur vich naam nidhaan hai karam paraapat hoi ||

The Treasure of the Naam is within the True Guru; by His Grace, it is obtained.

ਸਚਿ ਰਤੇ ਗੁਰ ਸਬਦ ਸਿਉ ਤਿਨ ਸਚੀ ਸਦਾ ਲਿਵ ਹੋਇ ॥

sach rate gur sabadh siau tin sachee sadhaa liv hoi ||

Those who are truly attuned to the Word of the Guru's Shabad-their love is forever True.

ਨਾਨਕ ਜਿਸ ਨੋ ਮੇਲੇ ਨ ਵਿਛੁੜੈ ਸਹਜਿ ਸਮਾਵੈ ਸੋਇ ॥੧॥

naanak jis no mele na vichhuRai sahaj samaavai soi ||1||

O Nanak, those who are united with Him shall not be separated again. They merge imperceptibly into God. ||1||

Third Mehla:

ਸੋ ਭਗਉਤੀ ਜੋੁ ਭਗਵੰਤੈ ਜਾਣੈ ॥

so bhagautee juo bhagava(n)tai jaanai ||

One who knows the Benevolent Lord God is the true devotee of Bhagaautee.

ਗੁਰ ਪਰਸਾਦੀ ਆਪੁ ਪਛਾਣੈ ॥

gur parasaadhee aap pachhaanai ||

By Guru's Grace, he is self-realized.

ਧਾਵਤੁ ਰਾਖੈ ਇਕਤੁ ਘਰਿ ਆਣੈ ॥

dhaavat raakhai ikat ghar aanai ||

He restrains his wandering mind, and brings it back to its own home within the self.

ਜੀਵਤੁ ਮਰੈ ਹਰਿ ਨਾਮੁ ਵਖਾਣੈ ॥

jeevat marai har naam vakhaanai ||

He remains dead while yet alive, and he chants the Name of the Lord.

ਐਸਾ ਭਗਉਤੀ ਉਤਮੁ ਹੋਇ ॥

aaisaa bhagautee utam hoi ||

Such a Bhagaautee is most exalted.

ਨਾਨਕ ਸਚਿ ਸਮਾਵੈ ਸੋਇ ॥੨॥

naanak sach samaavai soi ||2||

O Nanak, he merges into the True One. ||2||

Third Mehla:

ਅੰਤਰਿ ਕਪਟੁ ਭਗਉਤੀ ਕਹਾਏ ॥

a(n)tar kapaT bhagautee kahaae ||

He is full of deceit, and yet he calls himself a devotee of Bhagaautee.

ਪਾਖੰਡਿ ਪਾਰਬ੍ਰਹਮੁ ਕਦੇ ਨ ਪਾਏ ॥

paakha(n)dd paarabraham kadhe na paae ||

Through hypocrisy, he shall never attain the Supreme Lord God.

ਪਰ ਨਿੰਦਾ ਕਰੇ ਅੰਤਰਿ ਮਲੁ ਲਾਏ ॥

par ni(n)dhaa kare a(n)tar mal laae ||

He slanders others, and pollutes himself with his own filth.

ਬਾਹਰਿ ਮਲੁ ਧੋਵੈ ਮਨ ਕੀ ਜੂਠਿ ਨ ਜਾਏ ॥

baahar mal dhovai man kee jooTh na jaae ||

Outwardly, he washes off the filth, but the impurity of his mind does not go away.

ਸਤਸੰਗਤਿ ਸਿਉ ਬਾਦੁ ਰਚਾਏ ॥

satasa(n)gat siau baadh rachaae ||

He argues with the Sat Sangat, the True Congregation.

ਅਨਦਿਨੁ ਦੁਖੀਆ ਦੂਜੈ ਭਾਇ ਰਚਾਏ ॥

anadhin dhukheeaa dhoojai bhai rachaae ||

Night and day, he suffers, engrossed in the love of duality.

ਹਰਿ ਨਾਮੁ ਨ ਚੇਤੈ ਬਹੁ ਕਰਮ ਕਮਾਏ ॥

har naam na chetai bahu karam kamaae ||

He does not remember the Name of the Lord, but still, he performs all sorts of empty rituals.

ਪੂਰਬ ਲਿਖਿਆ ਸੁ ਮੇਟਣਾ ਨ ਜਾਏ ॥

poorab likhiaa su meTanaa na jaae ||

That which is pre-ordained cannot be erased.

ਨਾਨਕ ਬਿਨੁ ਸਤਿਗੁਰ ਸੇਵੇ ਮੋਖੁ ਨ ਪਾਏ ॥੩॥

naanak bin satigur seve mokh na paae ||3||

O Nanak, without serving the True Guru, liberation is not obtained. ||3||

ਪਉੜੀ ॥

Pauree:

ਸਤਿਗੁਰੁ ਜਿਨੀ ਧਿਆਇਆ ਸੇ ਕੜਿ ਨ ਸਵਾਹੀ ॥

satigur jinee dhiaaiaa se kaR na savaahee ||

Those who meditate on the True Guru shall not be burnt to ashes.

ਸਤਿਗੁਰੁ ਜਿਨੀ ਧਿਆਇਆ ਸੇ ਤ੍ਰਿਪਤਿ ਅਘਾਹੀ ॥

satigur jinee dhiaaiaa se tirapat aghaahee ||

Those who meditate on the True Guru are satisfied and fulfilled.

ਸਤਿਗੁਰੁ ਜਿਨੀ ਧਿਆਇਆ ਤਿਨ ਜਮ ਡਰੁ ਨਾਹੀ ॥

satigur jinee dhiaaiaa tin jam ddar naahee ||

Those who meditate on the True Guru are not afraid of the Messenger of Death.
