ਸੋਰਠਿ

ਗੁਰੁ ਅੰਕਸੁ ਜਿਨਿ ਨਾਮੁ ਦ੍ਰਿੜਾਇਆ ਭਾਈ ਮਨਿ ਵਸਿਆ ਚੂਕਾ ਭੇਖੁ ॥੭॥

gur a(n)kas jin naam dhiraRaiaa bhaiee man vasiaa chookaa bhekh ||7||

One who implants the Naam within himself, through the Guru's halter - O Siblings of Destiny, the Lord dwells in his mind, and he is free of hypocrisy. ||7||

ਇਹੁ ਤਨੁ ਹਾਟੁ ਸਰਾਫ ਕੋ ਭਾਈ ਵਖਰੁ ਨਾਮੁ ਅਪਾਰੁ ॥

eih tan haaT saraaf ko bhaiee vakhar naam apaar ||

This body is the jeweller's shop, O Siblings of Destiny; the incomparable Naam is the merchandise.

ਇਹੁ ਵਖਰੁ ਵਾਪਾਰੀ ਸੋ ਦ੍ਰਿੜੈ ਭਾਈ ਗੁਰ ਸਬਦਿ ਕਰੇ ਵੀਚਾਰੁ ॥

eih vakhar vaapaaree so dhiraRai bhaiee gur sabadh kare veechaar ||

The merchant secures this merchandise, O Siblings of Destiny, by contemplating the Word of the Guru's Shabad.

ਧਨੁ ਵਾਪਾਰੀ ਨਾਨਕਾ ਭਾਈ ਮੇਲਿ ਕਰੇ ਵਾਪਾਰੁ ॥੮॥੨॥

dhan vaapaaree naanakaa bhaiee mel kare vaapaar ||8||2||

Blessed is the merchant, O Nanak, who meets the Guru, and engages in this trade. ||8||2||

ਸੋਰਠਿ ਮਹਲਾ ੧ ॥

Sorat'h, First Mehla:

ਜਿਨੑੀ ਸਤਿਗੁਰੁ ਸੇਵਿਆ ਪਿਆਰੇ ਤਿਨੑ ਕੇ ਸਾਥ ਤਰੇ ॥

jin(h)ee satigur seviaa piaare tin(h) ke saath tare ||

Those who serve the True Guru, O Beloved, their companions are saved as well.

ਤਿਨੑਾ ਠਾਕ ਨ ਪਾਈਐ ਪਿਆਰੇ ਅੰਮ੍ਰਿਤ ਰਸਨ ਹਰੇ ॥

tin(h)aa Thaak na paieeaai piaare a(n)mirat rasan hare ||

No one blocks their way, O Beloved, and the Lord's Ambrosial Nectar is on their tongue.

ਬੂਡੇ ਭਾਰੇ ਭੈ ਬਿਨਾ ਪਿਆਰੇ ਤਾਰੇ ਨਦਰਿ ਕਰੇ ॥੧॥

boodde bhaare bhai binaa piaare taare nadhar kare ||1||

Without the Fear of God, they are so heavy that they sink and drown, O Beloved; but the Lord, casting His Glance of Grace, carries them across. ||1||

ਭੀ ਤੂਹੈ ਸਾਲਾਹਣਾ ਪਿਆਰੇ ਭੀ ਤੇਰੀ ਸਾਲਾਹ ॥

bhee toohai saalaahanaa piaare bhee teree saalaeh ||

I ever praise You, O Beloved, I ever sing Your Praises.

ਵਿਣੁ ਬੋਹਿਥ ਭੈ ਡੁਬੀਐ ਪਿਆਰੇ ਕੰਧੀ ਪਾਇ ਕਹਾਹ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥

vin bohith bhai ddubeeaai piaare ka(n)dhee pai kahaeh ||1|| rahaau ||

Without the boat, one is drowned in the sea of fear, O Beloved; how can I reach the distant shore? ||1||Pause||

ਸਾਲਾਹੀ ਸਾਲਾਹਣਾ ਪਿਆਰੇ ਦੂਜਾ ਅਵਰੁ ਨ ਕੋਇ ॥

saalaahee saalaahanaa piaare dhoojaa avar na koi ||

I praise the Praiseworthy Lord, O Beloved; there is no other one to praise.

ਮੇਰੇ ਪ੍ਰਭ ਸਾਲਾਹਨਿ ਸੇ ਭਲੇ ਪਿਆਰੇ ਸਬਦਿ ਰਤੇ ਰੰਗੁ ਹੋਇ ॥

mere prabh saalaahan se bhale piaare sabadh rate ra(n)g hoi ||

Those who praise my God are good, O Beloved; they are imbued with the Word of the Shabad, and His Love.

ਤਿਸ ਕੀ ਸੰਗਤਿ ਜੇ ਮਿਲੈ ਪਿਆਰੇ ਰਸੁ ਲੈ ਤਤੁ ਵਿਲੋਇ ॥੨॥

tis kee sa(n)gat je milai piaare ras lai tat viloi ||2||

If I join them, O Beloved, I can churn the essence and so find joy. ||2||

ਪਤਿ ਪਰਵਾਨਾ ਸਾਚ ਕਾ ਪਿਆਰੇ ਨਾਮੁ ਸਚਾ ਨੀਸਾਣੁ ॥

pat paravaanaa saach kaa piaare naam sachaa neesaan ||

The gateway to honor is Truth, O Beloved; it bears the Insignia of the True Name of the Lord.

ਆਇਆ ਲਿਖਿ ਲੈ ਜਾਵਣਾ ਪਿਆਰੇ ਹੁਕਮੀ ਹੁਕਮੁ ਪਛਾਣੁ ॥

aaiaa likh lai jaavanaa piaare hukamee hukam pachhaan ||

We come into the world, and we depart, with our destiny written and pre-ordained, O Beloved; realize the Command of the Commander.

ਗੁਰ ਬਿਨੁ ਹੁਕਮੁ ਨ ਬੂਝੀਐ ਪਿਆਰੇ ਸਾਚੇ ਸਾਚਾ ਤਾਣੁ ॥੩॥

gur bin hukam na boojheeaai piaare saache saachaa taan ||3||

Without the Guru, this Command is not understood, O Beloved; True is the Power of the True Lord. ||3||

ਹੁਕਮੈ ਅੰਦਰਿ ਨਿੰਮਿਆ ਪਿਆਰੇ ਹੁਕਮੈ ਉਦਰ ਮਝਾਰਿ ॥

hukamai a(n)dhar ni(n)miaa piaare hukamai udhar majhaar ||

By His Command, we are conceived, O Beloved, and by His Command, we grow in the womb.

ਹੁਕਮੈ ਅੰਦਰਿ ਜੰਮਿਆ ਪਿਆਰੇ ਊਧਉ ਸਿਰ ਕੈ ਭਾਰਿ ॥

hukamai a(n)dhar ja(n)miaa piaare uoodhau sir kai bhaar ||

By His Command, we are born, O Beloved, head-first, and upside-down.

ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਦਰਗਹ ਜਾਣੀਐ ਪਿਆਰੇ ਚਲੈ ਕਾਰਜ ਸਾਰਿ ॥੪॥

gurmukh dharageh jaaneeaai piaare chalai kaaraj saar ||4||

The Gurmukh is honored in the Court of the Lord, O Beloved; he departs after resolving his affairs. ||4||

ਹੁਕਮੈ ਅੰਦਰਿ ਆਇਆ ਪਿਆਰੇ ਹੁਕਮੇ ਜਾਦੋ ਜਾਇ ॥

hukamai a(n)dhar aaiaa piaare hukame jaadho jai ||

By His Command, one comes into the world, O Beloved, and by His Will, he goes.

ਹੁਕਮੇ ਬੰਨਿੑ ਚਲਾਈਐ ਪਿਆਰੇ ਮਨਮੁਖਿ ਲਹੈ ਸਜਾਇ ॥

hukame ba(n)ni(h) chalaieeaai piaare manmukh lahai sajai ||

By His Will, some are bound and gagged and driven away, O Beloved; the self-willed manmukhs suffer their punishment.

ਹੁਕਮੇ ਸਬਦਿ ਪਛਾਣੀਐ ਪਿਆਰੇ ਦਰਗਹ ਪੈਧਾ ਜਾਇ ॥੫॥

hukame sabadh pachhaaneeaai piaare dharageh paidhaa jai ||5||

By His Command, the Word of the Shabad, is realized, O Beloved, and one goes to the Court of the Lord robed in honor. ||5||

ਹੁਕਮੇ ਗਣਤ ਗਣਾਈਐ ਪਿਆਰੇ ਹੁਕਮੇ ਹਉਮੈ ਦੋਇ ॥

hukame ganat ganaieeaai piaare hukame haumai dhoi ||

By His Command, some accounts are accounted for, O Beloved; by His Command, some suffer in egotism and duality.

ਹੁਕਮੇ ਭਵੈ ਭਵਾਈਐ ਪਿਆਰੇ ਅਵਗਣਿ ਮੁਠੀ ਰੋਇ ॥

hukame bhavai bhavaieeaai piaare avagan muThee roi ||

By His Command, one wanders in reincarnation, O Beloved; deceived by sins and demerits, he cries out in his suffering.

ਹੁਕਮੁ ਸਿਞਾਪੈ ਸਾਹ ਕਾ ਪਿਆਰੇ ਸਚੁ ਮਿਲੈ ਵਡਿਆਈ ਹੋਇ ॥੬॥

hukam sin(j)aapai saeh kaa piaare sach milai vaddiaaiee hoi ||6||

If he comes to realize the Command of the Lord's Will, O Beloved, then he is blessed with Truth and Honor. ||6||

ਆਖਣਿ ਅਉਖਾ ਆਖੀਐ ਪਿਆਰੇ ਕਿਉ ਸੁਣੀਐ ਸਚੁ ਨਾਉ ॥

aakhan aaukhaa aakheeaai piaare kiau suneeaai sach naau ||

It is so difficult to speak it, O Beloved; how can we speak, and hear, the True Name?

ਜਿਨੑੀ ਸੋ ਸਾਲਾਹਿਆ ਪਿਆਰੇ ਹਉ ਤਿਨੑ ਬਲਿਹਾਰੈ ਜਾਉ ॥

jin(h)ee so saalaahiaa piaare hau tin(h) balihaarai jaau ||

I am a sacrifice to those who praise the Lord, O Beloved.

ਨਾਉ ਮਿਲੈ ਸੰਤੋਖੀਆਂ ਪਿਆਰੇ ਨਦਰੀ ਮੇਲਿ ਮਿਲਾਉ ॥੭॥

naau milai sa(n)tokheeaa(n) piaare nadharee mel milaau ||7||

I have obtained the Name, and I am satisfied, O Beloved; by His Grace, I am united in His Union. ||7||

ਕਾਇਆ ਕਾਗਦੁ ਜੇ ਥੀਐ ਪਿਆਰੇ ਮਨੁ ਮਸਵਾਣੀ ਧਾਰਿ ॥

kaiaa kaagadh je theeaai piaare man masavaanee dhaar ||

If my body were to become the paper, O Beloved, and my mind the inkpot;

ਲਲਤਾ ਲੇਖਣਿ ਸਚ ਕੀ ਪਿਆਰੇ ਹਰਿ ਗੁਣ ਲਿਖਹੁ ਵੀਚਾਰਿ ॥

lalataa lekhan sach kee piaare har gun likhahu veechaar ||

and if my tongue became the pen, O Beloved, I would write, and contemplate, the Glorious Praises of the True Lord.

ਧਨੁ ਲੇਖਾਰੀ ਨਾਨਕਾ ਪਿਆਰੇ ਸਾਚੁ ਲਿਖੈ ਉਰਿ ਧਾਰਿ ॥੮॥੩॥

dhan lekhaaree naanakaa piaare saach likhai ur dhaar ||8||3||

Blessed is that scribe, O Nanak, who writes the True Name, and enshrines it within his heart. ||8||3||

ਸੋਰਠਿ ਮਹਲਾ ੧ ਪਹਿਲਾ ਦੁਤੁਕੀ ॥

soraTh mahalaa pehilaa pahilaa dhutukee ||

Sorat'h, First Mehla, Dho-Thukay:

ਤੂ ਗੁਣਦਾਤੌ ਨਿਰਮਲੋ ਭਾਈ ਨਿਰਮਲੁ ਨਾ ਮਨੁ ਹੋਇ ॥

too gunadhaatau niramalo bhaiee niramal naa man hoi ||

You are the Giver of virtue, O Immaculate Lord, but my mind is not immaculate, O Siblings of Destiny.

ਹਮ ਅਪਰਾਧੀ ਨਿਰਗੁਣੇ ਭਾਈ ਤੁਝ ਹੀ ਤੇ ਗੁਣੁ ਸੋਇ ॥੧॥

ham aparaadhee niragune bhaiee tujh hee te gun soi ||1||

I am a worthless sinner, O Siblings of Destiny; virtue is obtained from You alone, Lord. ||1||

ਮੇਰੇ ਪ੍ਰੀਤਮਾ ਤੂ ਕਰਤਾ ਕਰਿ ਵੇਖੁ ॥

mere preetamaa too karataa kar vekh ||

O my Beloved Creator Lord, You create, and You behold.

ਹਉ ਪਾਪੀ ਪਾਖੰਡੀਆ ਭਾਈ ਮਨਿ ਤਨਿ ਨਾਮ ਵਿਸੇਖੁ ॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥

hau paapee paakha(n)ddeeaa bhaiee man tan naam visekh || rahaau ||

I am a hypocritical sinner, O Siblings of Destiny. Bless my mind and body with Your Name, O Lord. ||Pause||
