ਟੋਡੀ ਮਹਲਾ ੫ ॥

Toddee mahalaa panjavaa ||

Todee, Fifth Mehla:

ਹਰਿ ਹਰਿ ਚਰਨ ਰਿਦੈ ਉਰ ਧਾਰੇ ॥

har har charan ridhai ur dhaare ||

I have enshrined the Lord's Feet within my heart.

ਸਿਮਰਿ ਸੁਆਮੀ ਸਤਿਗੁਰੁ ਅਪੁਨਾ ਕਾਰਜ ਸਫਲ ਹਮਾਰੇ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥

simar suaamee satigur apunaa kaaraj safal hamaare ||1|| rahaau ||

Contemplating my Lord and Master, my True Guru, all my affairs have been resolved. ||1||Pause||

ਪੁੰਨ ਦਾਨ ਪੂਜਾ ਪਰਮੇਸੁਰ ਹਰਿ ਕੀਰਤਿ ਤਤੁ ਬੀਚਾਰੇ ॥

pu(n)n dhaan poojaa paramesur har keerat tat beechaare ||

The merits of giving donations to charity and devotional worship come from the Kirtan of the Praises of the Transcendent Lord; this is the true essence of wisdom.

ਗੁਨ ਗਾਵਤ ਅਤੁਲ ਸੁਖੁ ਪਾਇਆ ਠਾਕੁਰ ਅਗਮ ਅਪਾਰੇ ॥੧॥

gun gaavat atul sukh paiaa Thaakur agam apaare ||1||

Singing the Praises of the unapproachable, infinite Lord and Master, I have found immeasurable peace. ||1||

ਜੋ ਜਨ ਪਾਰਬ੍ਰਹਮਿ ਅਪਨੇ ਕੀਨੇ ਤਿਨ ਕਾ ਬਾਹੁਰਿ ਕਛੁ ਨ ਬੀਚਾਰੇ ॥

jo jan paarabraham apane keene tin kaa baahur kachh na beechaare ||

The Supreme Lord God does not consider the merits and demerits of those humble beings whom He makes His own.

ਨਾਮ ਰਤਨੁ ਸੁਨਿ ਜਪਿ ਜਪਿ ਜੀਵਾ ਹਰਿ ਨਾਨਕ ਕੰਠ ਮਝਾਰੇ ॥੨॥੧੧॥੩੦॥

naam ratan sun jap jap jeevaa har naanak ka(n)Th majhaare ||2||11||30||

Hearing, chanting and meditating on the jewel of the Naam, I live; Nanak wears the Lord as his necklace. ||2||11||30||

Todee, Ninth Mehla:

ੴ ਸਤਿਗੁਰ ਪ੍ਰਸਾਦਿ ॥

One Universal Creator God. By The Grace Of The True Guru:

ਕਹਉ ਕਹਾ ਅਪਨੀ ਅਧਮਾਈ ॥

kahau kahaa apanee adhamaiee ||

What can I say about my base nature?

ਉਰਝਿਓ ਕਨਕ ਕਾਮਨੀ ਕੇ ਰਸ ਨਹ ਕੀਰਤਿ ਪ੍ਰਭ ਗਾਈ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥

aurajhio kanak kaamanee ke ras neh keerat prabh gaiee ||1|| rahaau ||

I am entangled in the love of gold and women, and I have not sung the Kirtan of God's Praises. ||1||Pause||

ਜਗ ਝੂਠੇ ਕਉ ਸਾਚੁ ਜਾਨਿ ਕੈ ਤਾ ਸਿਉ ਰੁਚ ਉਪਜਾਈ ॥

jag jhooThe kau saach jaan kai taa siau ruch upajaiee ||

I judge the false world to be true, and I have fallen in love with it.

ਦੀਨ ਬੰਧ ਸਿਮਰਿਓ ਨਹੀ ਕਬਹੂ ਹੋਤ ਜੁ ਸੰਗਿ ਸਹਾਈ ॥੧॥

dheen ba(n)dh simario nahee kabahoo hot ju sa(n)g sahaiee ||1||

I have never contemplated the friend of the poor, who shall be my companion and helper in the end. ||1||

ਮਗਨ ਰਹਿਓ ਮਾਇਆ ਮੈ ਨਿਸ ਦਿਨਿ ਛੁਟੀ ਨ ਮਨ ਕੀ ਕਾਈ ॥

magan rahio maiaa mai nis dhin chhuTee na man kee kaiee ||

I remain intoxicated by Maya, night and day, and the filth of my mind will not depart.

ਕਹਿ ਨਾਨਕ ਅਬ ਨਾਹਿ ਅਨਤ ਗਤਿ ਬਿਨੁ ਹਰਿ ਕੀ ਸਰਨਾਈ ॥੨॥੧॥੩੧॥

keh naanak ab naeh anat gat bin har kee saranaiee ||2||1||31||

Says Nanak, now, without the Lord's Sanctuary, I cannot find salvation in any other way. ||2||1||31||

ਟੋਡੀ ਬਾਣੀ ਭਗਤਾਂ ਕੀ

Toddee baanee bhagataa(n) kee

Todee, The Word Of The Devotees:

ੴ ਸਤਿਗੁਰ ਪ੍ਰਸਾਦਿ ॥

ਕੋਈ ਬੋਲੈ ਨਿਰਵਾ ਕੋਈ ਬੋਲੈ ਦੂਰਿ ॥

koiee bolai niravaa koiee bolai dhoor ||

Some say that He is near, and others say that He is far away.

ਜਲ ਕੀ ਮਾਛੁਲੀ ਚਰੈ ਖਜੂਰਿ ॥੧॥

jal kee maachhulee charai khajoor ||1||

We might just as well say that the fish climbs out of the water, up the tree. ||1||

ਕਾਂਇ ਰੇ ਬਕਬਾਦੁ ਲਾਇਓ ॥

kaa(n)i re bakabaadh laio ||

Why do you speak such nonsense?

ਜਿਨਿ ਹਰਿ ਪਾਇਓ ਤਿਨਹਿ ਛਪਾਇਓ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥

jin har paio tineh chhapaio ||1|| rahaau ||

One who has found the Lord, keeps quiet about it. ||1||Pause||

ਪੰਡਿਤੁ ਹੋਇ ਕੈ ਬੇਦੁ ਬਖਾਨੈ ॥

pa(n)ddit hoi kai bedh bakhaanai ||

Those who become Pandits, religious scholars, recite the Vedas,

ਮੂਰਖੁ ਨਾਮਦੇਉ ਰਾਮਹਿ ਜਾਨੈ ॥੨॥੧॥

moorakh naamadheau raameh jaanai ||2||1||

but foolish Naam Dayv knows only the Lord. ||2||1||

ਕਉਨ ਕੋ ਕਲੰਕੁ ਰਹਿਓ ਰਾਮ ਨਾਮੁ ਲੇਤ ਹੀ ॥

kaun ko kala(n)k rahio raam naam let hee ||

Whose blemishes remain, when one chants the Lord's Name?

ਪਤਿਤ ਪਵਿਤ ਭਏ ਰਾਮੁ ਕਹਤ ਹੀ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥

patit pavit bhe raam kahat hee ||1|| rahaau ||

Sinners become pure, chanting the Lord's Name. ||1||Pause||

ਰਾਮ ਸੰਗਿ ਨਾਮਦੇਵ ਜਨ ਕਉ ਪ੍ਰਤਗਿਆ ਆਈ ॥

raam sa(n)g naamadhev jan kau pratagiaa aaiee ||

With the Lord, servant Naam Dayv has come to have faith.

ਏਕਾਦਸੀ ਬ੍ਰਤੁ ਰਹੈ ਕਾਹੇ ਕਉ ਤੀਰਥ ਜਾੲਂੀ ॥੧॥

ekaadhasee brat rahai kaahe kau teerath jaae(n)ee ||1||

I have stopped fasting on the eleventh day of each month; why should I bother to go on pilgrimages to sacred shrines? ||1||

ਭਨਤਿ ਨਾਮਦੇਉ ਸੁਕ੍ਰਿਤ ਸੁਮਤਿ ਭਏ ॥

bhanat naamadheau sukirat sumat bhe ||

Prays Naam Dayv, I have become a man of good deeds and good thoughts.

ਗੁਰਮਤਿ ਰਾਮੁ ਕਹਿ ਕੋ ਕੋ ਨ ਬੈਕੁੰਠਿ ਗਏ ॥੨॥੨॥

gurmat raam keh ko ko na baiku(n)Th ge ||2||2||

Chanting the Lord's Name, under Guru's Instructions, who has not gone to heaven? ||2||2||

ਤੀਨਿ ਛੰਦੇ ਖੇਲੁ ਆਛੈ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥

teen chha(n)dhe khel aachhai ||1|| rahaau ||

Here is a verse with a three-fold play on words. ||1||Pause||

ਕੁੰਭਾਰ ਕੇ ਘਰ ਹਾਂਡੀ ਆਛੈ ਰਾਜਾ ਕੇ ਘਰ ਸਾਂਡੀ ਗੋ ॥

ku(n)bhaar ke ghar haa(n)ddee aachhai raajaa ke ghar saa(n)ddee go ||

In the potter's home there are pots, and in the king's home there are camels.

ਬਾਮਨ ਕੇ ਘਰ ਰਾਂਡੀ ਆਛੈ ਰਾਂਡੀ ਸਾਂਡੀ ਹਾਂਡੀ ਗੋ ॥੧॥

baaman ke ghar raa(n)ddee aachhai raa(n)ddee saa(n)ddee haa(n)ddee go ||1||

In the Brahmin's home there are widows. So here they are: haandee, saandee, raandee. ||1||

ਬਾਣੀਏ ਕੇ ਘਰ ਹੀਂਗੁ ਆਛੈ ਭੈਸਰ ਮਾਥੈ ਸੀਂਗੁ ਗੋ ॥

baane'ee ke ghar hee(n)g aachhai bhaisar maathai see(n)g go ||

In the home of the grocer there is asafoetida; on the forehead of the buffalo there are horns.

ਦੇਵਲ ਮਧੇ ਲੀਗੁ ਆਛੈ ਲੀਗੁ ਸੀਗੁ ਹੀਗੁ ਗੋ ॥੨॥

dheval madhe leeg aachhai leeg seeg heeg go ||2||

In the temple of Shiva there are lingams. So here they are: heeng, seeng, leeng. ||2||

ਤੇਲੀ ਕੈ ਘਰ ਤੇਲੁ ਆਛੈ ਜੰਗਲ ਮਧੇ ਬੇਲ ਗੋ ॥

telee kai ghar tel aachhai ja(n)gal madhe bel go ||

In the house of the oil-presser there is oil; in the forest there are vines.

ਮਾਲੀ ਕੇ ਘਰ ਕੇਲ ਆਛੈ ਕੇਲ ਬੇਲ ਤੇਲ ਗੋ ॥੩॥

maalee ke ghar kel aachhai kel bel tel go ||3||

In the gardener's home there are bananas. So here they are: tayl, bayl, kayl. ||3||

ਸੰਤਾਂ ਮਧੇ ਗੋਬਿੰਦੁ ਆਛੈ ਗੋਕਲ ਮਧੇ ਸਿਆਮ ਗੋ ॥

sa(n)taa(n) madhe gobi(n)dh aachhai gokal madhe siaam go ||

The Lord of the Universe, Govind, is within His Saints; Krishna, Shyaam, is in Gokal.

ਨਾਮੇ ਮਧੇ ਰਾਮੁ ਆਛੈ ਰਾਮ ਸਿਆਮ ਗੋਬਿੰਦ ਗੋ ॥੪॥੩॥

naame madhe raam aachhai raam siaam gobi(n)dh go ||4||3||

The Lord, Raam, is in Naam Dayv. So here they are: Raam, Shyaam, Govind. ||4||3||
