ਸੋਰਠਿ

ਗਲਿ ਜੇਵੜੀ ਆਪੇ ਪਾਇਦਾ ਪਿਆਰਾ ਜਿਉ ਪ੍ਰਭੁ ਖਿੰਚੈ ਤਿਉ ਜਾਹਾ ॥

gal jevaRee aape paidhaa piaaraa jiau prabh khi(n)chai tiau jaahaa ||

The Beloved Himself puts the chains around their necks; as God pulls them, must they go.

ਜੋ ਗਰਬੈ ਸੋ ਪਚਸੀ ਪਿਆਰੇ ਜਪਿ ਨਾਨਕ ਭਗਤਿ ਸਮਾਹਾ ॥੪॥੬॥

jo garabai so pachasee piaare jap naanak bhagat samaahaa ||4||6||

Whoever harbors pride shall be destroyed, O Beloved; meditating on the Lord, Nanak is absorbed in devotional worship. ||4||6||

ਸੋਰਠਿ ਮਃ ੪ ਦੁਤੁਕੇ ॥

soraTh mahalaa chauthhaa dhutuke ||

Sorat'h, Fourth Mehla, Dho-Thukay:

ਅਨਿਕ ਜਨਮ ਵਿਛੁੜੇ ਦੁਖੁ ਪਾਇਆ ਮਨਮੁਖਿ ਕਰਮ ਕਰੈ ਅਹੰਕਾਰੀ ॥

anik janam vichhuRe dhukh paiaa manmukh karam karai aha(n)kaaree ||

Separated from the Lord for countless lifetimes, the self-willed manmukh suffers in pain, engaged in acts of egotism.

ਸਾਧੂ ਪਰਸਤ ਹੀ ਪ੍ਰਭੁ ਪਾਇਆ ਗੋਬਿਦ ਸਰਣਿ ਤੁਮਾਰੀ ॥੧॥

saadhoo parasat hee prabh paiaa gobidh saran tumaaree ||1||

Beholding the Holy Saint, I found God; O Lord of the Universe, I seek Your Sanctuary. ||1||

ਗੋਬਿਦ ਪ੍ਰੀਤਿ ਲਗੀ ਅਤਿ ਪਿਆਰੀ ॥

gobidh preet lagee at piaaree ||

The Love of God is very dear to me.

ਜਬ ਸਤਸੰਗ ਭਏ ਸਾਧੂ ਜਨ ਹਿਰਦੈ ਮਿਲਿਆ ਸਾਂਤਿ ਮੁਰਾਰੀ ॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥

jab satasa(n)g bhe saadhoo jan hiradhai miliaa saa(n)t muraaree || rahaau ||

When I joined the Sat Sangat, the Company of the Holy People, the Lord, the embodiment of peace, came into my heart. ||Pause||

ਤੂ ਹਿਰਦੈ ਗੁਪਤੁ ਵਸਹਿ ਦਿਨੁ ਰਾਤੀ ਤੇਰਾ ਭਾਉ ਨ ਬੁਝਹਿ ਗਵਾਰੀ ॥

too hiradhai gupat vaseh dhin raatee teraa bhaau na bujheh gavaaree ||

You dwell, hidden, within my heart day and night, Lord; but the poor fools do not understand Your Love.

ਸਤਿਗੁਰੁ ਪੁਰਖੁ ਮਿਲਿਆ ਪ੍ਰਭੁ ਪ੍ਰਗਟਿਆ ਗੁਣ ਗਾਵੈ ਗੁਣ ਵੀਚਾਰੀ ॥੨॥

satigur purakh miliaa prabh pragaTiaa gun gaavai gun veechaaree ||2||

Meeting with the Almighty True Guru, God was revealed to me; I sing His Glorious Praises, and reflect upon His Glories. ||2||

ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਪ੍ਰਗਾਸੁ ਭਇਆ ਸਾਤਿ ਆਈ ਦੁਰਮਤਿ ਬੁਧਿ ਨਿਵਾਰੀ ॥

gurmukh pragaas bhiaa saat aaiee dhuramat budh nivaaree ||

As Gurmukh, I have become enlightened; peace has come, and evil-mindedness has been dispelled from my mind.

ਆਤਮ ਬ੍ਰਹਮੁ ਚੀਨਿ ਸੁਖੁ ਪਾਇਆ ਸਤਸੰਗਤਿ ਪੁਰਖ ਤੁਮਾਰੀ ॥੩॥

aatam braham cheen sukh paiaa satasa(n)gat purakh tumaaree ||3||

Understanding the relationship of the individual soul with God, I have found peace, in Your Sat Sangat, Your True Congregation, O Lord. ||3||

ਪੁਰਖੈ ਪੁਰਖੁ ਮਿਲਿਆ ਗੁਰੁ ਪਾਇਆ ਜਿਨ ਕਉ ਕਿਰਪਾ ਭਈ ਤੁਮਾਰੀ ॥

purakhai purakh miliaa gur paiaa jin kau kirapaa bhiee tumaaree ||

Those who are blessed by Your Kind Mercy, meet the Almighty Lord, and find the Guru.

ਨਾਨਕ ਅਤੁਲੁ ਸਹਜ ਸੁਖੁ ਪਾਇਆ ਅਨਦਿਨੁ ਜਾਗਤੁ ਰਹੈ ਬਨਵਾਰੀ ॥੪॥੭॥

naanak atul sahaj sukh paiaa anadhin jaagat rahai banavaaree ||4||7||

Nanak has found the immeasurable, celestial peace; night and day, he remains awake to the Lord, the Master of the Forest of the Universe. ||4||7||

ਸੋਰਠਿ ਮਹਲਾ ੪ ॥

Sorat'h, Fourth Mehla:

ਹਰਿ ਸਿਉ ਪ੍ਰੀਤਿ ਅੰਤਰੁ ਮਨੁ ਬੇਧਿਆ ਹਰਿ ਬਿਨੁ ਰਹਣੁ ਨ ਜਾਈ ॥

har siau preet a(n)tar man bedhiaa har bin rahan na jaiee ||

The inner depths of my mind are pierced by love for the Lord; I cannot live without the Lord.

ਜਿਉ ਮਛੁਲੀ ਬਿਨੁ ਨੀਰੈ ਬਿਨਸੈ ਤਿਉ ਨਾਮੈ ਬਿਨੁ ਮਰਿ ਜਾਈ ॥੧॥

jiau machhulee bin neerai binasai tiau naamai bin mar jaiee ||1||

Just as the fish dies without water, I die without the Lord's Name. ||1||

ਮੇਰੇ ਪ੍ਰਭ ਕਿਰਪਾ ਜਲੁ ਦੇਵਹੁ ਹਰਿ ਨਾਈ ॥

mere prabh kirapaa jal dhevahu har naiee ||

O my God, please bless me with the water of Your Name.

ਹਉ ਅੰਤਰਿ ਨਾਮੁ ਮੰਗਾ ਦਿਨੁ ਰਾਤੀ ਨਾਮੇ ਹੀ ਸਾਂਤਿ ਪਾਈ ॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥

hau a(n)tar naam ma(n)gaa dhin raatee naame hee saa(n)t paiee || rahaau ||

I beg for Your Name, deep within myself, day and night; through the Name, I find peace. ||Pause||

ਜਿਉ ਚਾਤ੍ਰਿਕੁ ਜਲ ਬਿਨੁ ਬਿਲਲਾਵੈ ਬਿਨੁ ਜਲ ਪਿਆਸ ਨ ਜਾਈ ॥

jiau chaatirak jal bin bilalaavai bin jal piaas na jaiee ||

The song-bird cries out for lack of water - without water, its thirst cannot be quenched.

ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਜਲੁ ਪਾਵੈ ਸੁਖ ਸਹਜੇ ਹਰਿਆ ਭਾਇ ਸੁਭਾਈ ॥੨॥

gurmukh jal paavai sukh sahaje hariaa bhai subhaiee ||2||

The Gurmukh obtains the water of celestial bliss, and is rejuvenated, blossoming forth through the blessed Love of the Lord. ||2||

ਮਨਮੁਖ ਭੂਖੇ ਦਹ ਦਿਸ ਡੋਲਹਿ ਬਿਨੁ ਨਾਵੈ ਦੁਖੁ ਪਾਈ ॥

manmukh bhookhe dheh dhis ddoleh bin naavai dhukh paiee ||

The self-willed manmukhs are hungry, wandering around in the ten directions; without the Name, they suffer in pain.

ਜਨਮਿ ਮਰੈ ਫਿਰਿ ਜੋਨੀ ਆਵੈ ਦਰਗਹਿ ਮਿਲੈ ਸਜਾਈ ॥੩॥

janam marai fir jonee aavai dharageh milai sajaiee ||3||

They are born, only to die, and enter into reincarnation again; in the Court of the Lord, they are punished. ||3||

ਕ੍ਰਿਪਾ ਕਰਹਿ ਤਾ ਹਰਿ ਗੁਣ ਗਾਵਹ ਹਰਿ ਰਸੁ ਅੰਤਰਿ ਪਾਈ ॥

kirapaa kareh taa har gun gaaveh har ras a(n)tar paiee ||

But if the Lord shows His Mercy, then one comes to sing His Glorious Praises; deep within the nucleus of his own self, he finds the sublime essence of the Lord's elixir.

ਨਾਨਕ ਦੀਨ ਦਇਆਲ ਭਏ ਹੈ ਤ੍ਰਿਸਨਾ ਸਬਦਿ ਬੁਝਾਈ ॥੪॥੮॥

naanak dheen dhiaal bhe hai tirasanaa sabadh bujhaiee ||4||8||

The Lord has become Merciful to meek Nanak, and through the Word of the Shabad, his desires are quenched. ||4||8||

ਸੋਰਠਿ ਮਹਲਾ ੪ ਪੰਚਪਦਾ ॥

soraTh mahalaa chauthhaa pa(n)chapadhaa ||

Sorat'h, Fourth Mehla, Panch-Padhay:

ਅਚਰੁ ਚਰੈ ਤਾ ਸਿਧਿ ਹੋਈ ਸਿਧੀ ਤੇ ਬੁਧਿ ਪਾਈ ॥

achar charai taa sidh hoiee sidhee te budh paiee ||

If one eats the uneatable, then he becomes a Siddha, a being of perfect spirituality; through this perfection, he obtains wisdom.

ਪ੍ਰੇਮ ਕੇ ਸਰ ਲਾਗੇ ਤਨ ਭੀਤਰਿ ਤਾ ਭ੍ਰਮੁ ਕਾਟਿਆ ਜਾਈ ॥੧॥

prem ke sar laage tan bheetar taa bhram kaaTiaa jaiee ||1||

When the arrow of the Lord's Love pierces his body, then his doubt is eradicated. ||1||

ਮੇਰੇ ਗੋਬਿਦ ਅਪੁਨੇ ਜਨ ਕਉ ਦੇਹਿ ਵਡਿਆਈ ॥

mere gobidh apune jan kau dheh vaddiaaiee ||

O my Lord of the Universe, please bless Your humble servant with glory.

ਗੁਰਮਤਿ ਰਾਮ ਨਾਮੁ ਪਰਗਾਸਹੁ ਸਦਾ ਰਹਹੁ ਸਰਣਾਈ ॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥

gurmat raam naam paragaasahu sadhaa rahahu saranaiee || rahaau ||

Under Guru's Instructions, enlighten me with the Lord's Name, that I may dwell forever in Your Sanctuary. ||Pause||

ਇਹੁ ਸੰਸਾਰੁ ਸਭੁ ਆਵਣ ਜਾਣਾ ਮਨ ਮੂਰਖ ਚੇਤਿ ਅਜਾਣਾ ॥

eih sa(n)saar sabh aavan jaanaa man moorakh chet ajaanaa ||

This whole world is engrossed in coming and going; O my foolish and ignorant mind, be mindful of the Lord.

ਹਰਿ ਜੀਉ ਕ੍ਰਿਪਾ ਕਰਹੁ ਗੁਰੁ ਮੇਲਹੁ ਤਾ ਹਰਿ ਨਾਮਿ ਸਮਾਣਾ ॥੨॥

har jeeau kirapaa karahu gur melahu taa har naam samaanaa ||2||

O Dear Lord, please, take pity upon me, and unite me with the Guru, that I may merge in the Lord's Name. ||2||

ਜਿਸ ਕੀ ਵਥੁ ਸੋਈ ਪ੍ਰਭੁ ਜਾਣੈ ਜਿਸ ਨੋ ਦੇਇ ਸੁ ਪਾਏ ॥ ਵਸਤੁ ਅਨੂਪ ਅਤਿ ਅਗਮ ਅਗੋਚਰ ਗੁਰੁ ਪੂਰਾ ਅਲਖੁ ਲਖਾਏ ॥੩॥

jis kee vath soiee prabh jaanai jis no dhei su paae || vasat anoop at agam agochar gur pooraa alakh lakhaae ||3||

Only one who has it knows God; he alone has it, to whom God has given it - so very beautiful, unapproachable and unfathomable. Through the Perfect Guru, the unknowable is known. ||3||

ਜਿਨਿ ਇਹ ਚਾਖੀ ਸੋਈ ਜਾਣੈ ਗੂੰਗੇ ਕੀ ਮਿਠਿਆਈ ॥

jin ieh chaakhee soiee jaanai goo(n)ge kee miThiaaiee ||

Only one who tastes it knows it, like the mute, who tastes the sweet candy, but cannot speak of it.
